| Timber Piling The damage and deterioration of timber pilings in the area of the waterline is caused by marine borers and Limnoria Organisms. Marine Borers attack the healthy piling from the outside and burrow into the pile where there are frequent openings to the water for circulation. The end result is a pile with significant cross-sectional loss. The ideal situation would be to protect healthy pilings before damage occurs. Unfortunately these borers act very quickly and unprotected pilings will quickly become infested by the organisms and damage will occur very quickly. Once the timber is penetrated by the borers you must kill them and reinforce the damaged piling. If the infested pile is left untreated then the borers will continue to eat away at the timber until it is completely destroyed. |

| Concrete Pilings Concrete Pilings are typically used as support for piers, bridges and docks. The damage and deterioration of these pilings is caused by the corrosion of the steel reinforcement that is inside the concrete piling. Steel rebar is protected inside concrete because the concrete is very alkaline which prevents rust. But if there are chloride ions present, such as from deicing salts, the chloride destroys the "passivating layer" of alkalinity around the steel, allowing it to rust. Rust has greater volume than steel and the expansion presses against the concrete putting it in tension and causing it to crack and pop off. Chlorides get to the concrete through cracks or by simply penetrating through the concrete's pore structure. |
